Why New Haven Clocks Are Still Valued
New Haven clocks remain highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts because they represent a century-long contribution to American clock-making. From their early roots supplying movements to the largest clock manufacturers of the era to producing a broad range of shelf, mantel, wall, and pocket timepieces, the company’s clocks combine reliable mechanical design with stylistic variety. Many New Haven models are sought after both for their craftsmanship and as pieces of horological history, making their upkeep and repair important to collectors and families alike.

New Haven Clock History (Summary)
The New Haven Clock Company was founded on February 7, 1853, in New Haven, Connecticut, by Hiram Camp and his associates to supply clock movements to the Jerome Manufacturing Company. When Jerome went bankrupt in 1856, New Haven purchased its assets and quickly became a major independent clock maker. By 1860, the company was producing hundreds of thousands of clocks annually, and its new factory became a central hub of American clock production. Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, New Haven continued to grow and modernize, weathering economic challenges, expanding into wristwatches and other timepieces, and contributing precision devices during World War II. Despite these efforts, persistent financial difficulties led to reorganization and ultimately the company’s closure in 1960 after more than a century of operation.

Caring for a New Haven Clock
Proper maintenance is key to keeping a New Haven clock running accurately for decades. These clocks benefit from periodic professional service that includes cleaning and lubricating the movement, checking and adjusting the timing and strike mechanisms, and inspecting wear points such as pivots and bushings. Because many New Haven clocks have not been serviced in many years, a full evaluation can identify hidden issues before they become costly problems. Caring for these timepieces with gentle, knowledgeable handling preserves both their performance and their collectible value.
