Why Elliott London Clocks Are Still Valued
Elliott London clocks are prized for their long tradition of quality British clockmaking and their distinctive mechanical engineering. Founded in the late 19th century by James Jones Elliott, the company became known for well-made movements — including weight-driven and chiming mechanisms — and for supplying movements to both domestic and international makers, making Elliott clocks sought-after by collectors who appreciate both historical significance and enduring performance.
Elliott London Clock History
The roots of Elliott London clocks stretch back to 1865, when James Jones Elliott began his apprenticeship to learn the craft of clockmaking in the heart of the City of London. Over the next two decades, he mastered the skills needed to build clock movements and pioneered a patented weight-driven movement with tubular chimes that quickly earned acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 1886, the business formally became a clockmaker under the Elliott name, producing highly regarded clocks known for quality and melodic chimes. After James Elliott’s death in 1904, his son Frank Westcombe Elliott carried the company forward, including a merger in 1909 with Grimshaw Baxter and later, in 1923, the establishment of F.W. Elliott Ltd, which became one of Britain’s most respected clock firms.
During World War II, Elliott clocks supported the military and aviation industries, and although the factory endured bombing in 1943, production continued. The firm remained associated with fine mechanical clocks well into the late 20th century before winding down operations in the 1990s.

Caring for an Elliott London Clock
Elliott London clocks — with their tubular chimes, pendulums, and traditional movements — benefit from regular cleaning and professional maintenance. Like all antique mechanical clocks, they need proper lubrication, calibration, and environmental care to maintain accuracy and prevent wear. Whether it’s cleaning aged oil from pivots, regulating timekeeping, or servicing chime assemblies, routine care helps preserve your Elliott clock as a working heirloom.
Temperature, humidity, and dust can all affect performance: keep your clock out of direct sunlight and away from fireplaces or heating vents, and always use a qualified specialist for repairs to protect original movement components.
