Ansonia clocks are among the most recognizable and widely collected American antique clocks. At Clock Repair Studio, we regularly service Ansonia mantel clocks, shelf clocks, regulators, and wall clocks—many still operating on their original mechanical movements more than a century after they were made.
Many Ansonia clocks only require rewinding every eight days due to their eight-day movements. In addition to regulator clocks such as the 1886 “General” model—a brass, eight-day, weight-driven clock with a cherry case and seconds-counting dial—Ansonia produced an impressive range of designs. These included mantel clocks with intricately painted china cases, beehive shelf clocks, miniature ogee shelf clocks with alarms, shelf clocks topped with glass domes, and numerous other mantel styles that remain highly collectible today.

Why Ansonia Clocks Are Still Valued
Collectors and families continue to treasure Ansonia clocks for their mechanical reliability, variety of designs, and strong connection to American manufacturing history. When properly maintained, these clocks remain accurate, dependable timepieces rather than decorative artifacts alone.

Ansonia Clock History
The roots of the Ansonia Clock Company trace back to Anson Greene Phelps, who established the Ansonia Brass Company in 1844. That enterprise would later give rise to one of the most prolific clock manufacturers in American history.
Over the following decades, Ansonia manufactured millions of clocks, supplying homes throughout the United States and abroad. Their success stemmed from durable, serviceable movements paired with bold and often ornate case designs that set them apart from competitors.
The company’s story came to a dramatic end in 1929, when Ansonia entered receivership and ultimately ceded its remaining assets to Soviet Russia, closing a significant chapter in American industrial and horological history.
